MIL-DTL-44400A
4.3.5 End item testing. Tents shall be tested as specified in 4.4. The lot size shall be
expressed in units of end items. The sample unit shall be one tent. The inspection level shall be
S-2. Any test failure shall be cause for rejection of the lot.
*4.3.6 Packaging examination. The fully packaged end items shall be examined for
marking, materials, workmanship and content defects.
4.4 Methods of inspection.
4.4.1 Wicking of sewing thread (cup test). The end item unit shall be tested once on a
wall assembly panel feld seam (see 3.3.5).
4.4.1.1 Procedure. Suspend the seamed section of the test fabric in the center of a 6 +
1/8 inch diameter hoop and form a depression with the seamed fabric in the hoop to a depth of 1
+ ¼ inch. Slowly pour 500 ml of water at 77o + 4oF into the cupped area (depression) and
observe the under surface of the fabric for water penetration. Any wicking of water along the
sewing thread, identified by a discoloration or darkening of the thread within 5 minutes after
water is poured shall constitute a test failure. Water leakage through the needle holes or between
the plies of the lapped seam fabric shall not be considered a failure.
4.4.2 Seam leakage test. The end item unit shall be tested on one roof cap assembly, one
rain gutter assembly and one floor assembly for seam leakage on an area of stitching that has been
treated with seam sealant (see 3.3.6). The end item unit shall be laid over a 6 1/8 inch diameter
hoop and form a depression with the seamed fabric in the hoop to a depth of 1 + ¼ inch with the
seam to be tested running through the center of the depression. Slowly pour 500 ml of water at
77o + 4oF into the cupped area (depression) and observe the under surface of the fabric for water
penetration. Any wicking of water along the sewing thread, identified by a discoloration or
darkening of the thread within 5 minutes after water is poured shall constitute a test failure.
Water leakage through the needle holes or between the plies of the lapped seam fabric shall not be
considered a failure.
4.4.3 Seam strength test. The end item unit seams shall be tested in accordance with
Method 8311 of FED-STD-601. Any break in the seam that indicates the seam strength is less
than 80% of the fabric strength shall be considered a test failure (see 3.3.7).

PACKAGING
*5.1 Packaging. For acquisition purposes, the packaging requirements shall be as
specified in the contract or order (see 6.2). When actual packaging of materiel is to be performed
