each listed component complies with requirements specified herein. The contracting officer, at his
option, may require a physical sample of the proposed substitution. Approval of the submitted
listing, together with necessary supporting data, authorizes the commencement of first article or
production manufacture, as applicable, and does not relieve the contractor of the responsibility
that these components perform in accordance with specified requirements when incorporated into
the end product.
3.4 Design. The frame sections shall be designed to provide a 16 foot wide by 8 foot 6
inch high tent frame. The frame shall be expandable in length by increasing the number of
expandable sections. The end section shall provide for the first 8 foot length of frame. Each
expandable section shall provide for an additional 8 foot length of frame.
3.5 Construction. Construction of the frame sections shall conform to Drawings
5-4-975, 5-4-976, 5-4-977, 5-4-2302 and as specified herein. The frame sections shall be capable
of being erected and the stud (item 7-6) shall be capable of being turned within the pad (item 7-5)
by hand operation without having to use a tool for force. Where rivets are used as hinge pins
(items 7-10 and 7-11), the set of the rivets shall be such as to allow for ease of rotation. The
diagonal brace (item 7-4) and shackle brace (item 7-7) shall be capable of being rotated by hand
operation. Heating of the hinge pin (item 8) is allowed to facilitate upsetting the ends of the hinge
pin securely into the countersink of (item 3-6) and (item 3-7) so as to prevent hinge pins from
becoming loose and disengaged.
3.5.1 Welding. All welding shall be sound, smooth and uniform.
3.5.2 Riveting. All rivets shall be securely set.
*3.5.3 Castings. Castings shall be clean and free from pits, blowholes flashing and scale.
*3.5.4 Stitching. Stitch type shall be 301, 5-7 stitches per inch in accordance with
ASTM-D-6193.
3.6 Finish. Interior surfaces of rectangular tubes, where slotted or diagonally cut at end,
and shank of through rivets need not be primed or enameled.
3.6.1 Cleaning and treatment. Prior to assembly, all completely fabricated metal
components of the frame sections shall be thoroughly cleaned and exterior surfaces of aluminum
alloy shall be prepared for painting in accordance with class 1A treatment of MIL-C-5541.
3.6.2 Priming. After cleaning and treatment, as applicable, and prior to assembly, exterior
surfaces of metal components including chains, rings, screws, plus both sides of steel eave and
ridge-gusset plates and header end plates shall be completely coated with primer specified in 3.2.6
except the shank of the quick release pin shall be free of primer.
3.6.3 Enameling. After the primer has been allowed to dry, the exterior surfaces of the
assembled frame section components shall be completely coated with enamel specified in 3.2.7
except the shank of the quick release pin shall be free of enamel. The finished coating shall not be
wet or tacky and shall be continuous and uniform, i.e., free of sag, run, pinhole, blister, wrinkle,
area of thin or no film, scratch or scuff, and foreign matter imbedded in finish. The contractor
shall touch up areas of finish damaged during flexing of movable joints.
*3.6.4 Epoxy powder coating. As an alternate to pretreatment and lacquering or
enameling specified in 3.6.1 and 3.6.2 the surface of the frame shall be prepared and coated as
follows:
